After the safari, we flew to the island of Zanzibar in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Tanzania.  Zanzibar is totally different than the mainland, it is exotic- very hot, white powdery sand beaches, and different people- 98% are muslim.  As we drove to our resort, I watched heavy oxen with floppy ears and a hump pulling carts down the streets.  All of the children must have just gotten out of school because hundreds were walking down the road in identical uniforms- white head scarves and purple dresses for girls, with little black smiling faces peering out from the white.  Over all this chaos, the Muslim call to prayer beckoned eerily over the palm trees.  It was a very fascinating place- slightly more geared for tourists than I prefer, but still incredibly beautiful.

Congrats on your climb---I know I could never make it! Did you get to see the giraffs and the big animals close up, or only with binoculars? I am going to Africa in August for my 50th birthday and don't know where is the best place to go. I only have two weeks tops for that section of the trip. Thanks, Dr. Rita Rae

Yes you see them very close. Sometimes they don't get out of the way! They are very used to tourists, they don't even seem to notice you. I went to the most popular places: Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro crater, and Serengetti. I recommend all 3.
