Then we head to Washington DC in the mainland US for a couple of days.  This is partly to break up the long journey home, and also because it is a good place to visit.

We arrived in Washington DC on the day the Americans celebrate Thanksgiving, which meant that the entire city was shut! A bit like a ghost town, with a handful of confused tourists, and all the homeless people.

Despite being told by everyone in Hawaii that it would be freezing cold in Washington, it was actually lovely weather, sunny and about 21 degrees. At least for the first day, then the temperature dropped by about 15 degrees, which did make it rather chilly - although still sunny.

Washington is a good city to wander around, as you can see a lot of the sites in close proximity to each other - the White House, Washington Memorial, FBI Building, the Smithsonian buildings and Capitol Hill. Also, rather bizarrely, in a city with a population of only about half a million, they have 385 Starbucks coffee shops!!

It was also rather strange that, after having Spring in most of the countries we had visited so far, we came to Washington in late Autumn. After Thanksgiving on the Thursday (the day we arrived), all of a sudden Christmas decorations appeared everywhere, as the city changed the focus of celebrations from one holiday to the next. A bit sudden for us, bearing in mind we were lying on a beach only 2 days previously!

You had better get used to it - Christmas, I mean. We expect to receive your wish lists a.s.a.p. See you soon. Oh, by the way: It's good to have you back in two whole pieces.
