Scenic, Washington is famous for having the longest rail tunnel in the USA at just under eight miles in length. Situated at the bottom of Stevens Pass, the town no longer exists, but once was a thriving community based on the Great Northern RR.
The area surrounding Scenic is a conglomeration of mtn peaks and the serene Tye River. Right above Scenic lay the original RR line that exited through a shorter tunnel under Stevens Pass. Today this old railbed is now a fascinating trail with breath taking views of the canyon below and the new RR tracks. Much of the area is hikable, and in some spots an excellent place to mtn bike.
At the top of the pass is the ski resort named Stevens Pass, appropriately. Though there aren't any overnight logding available, it is an easy day trip from Seattle if one wishes to slide down the slippery slopes on one, or two planks.
For the railfan community, this is one of the premier spots to watch trains, usually eastbounds may wait in the siding to let the tunnel clear of any smoke before entering. There is much more to add, but I will update later on! This is a great place to visit, check it out!
