Day 4 saw 110 puncture free miles thankfully (and amazingly given that we'd been averaging a healthy one every 23 miles until then). There were a lot of hills though as we passed through Washington state towards the Columbia River and over the long railway bridge just outside Castle Rock, though the train doesn't run anymore...
The hub of the social scene in the small southern Washington towns is clearly the gas stations (aka petrol stations) where underage kids can buy beer and obese truckers can buy fried chicken. Cyclists can also buy Gatorade and "Turbo Charge Coffee" (high in flavour, high in caffine) which we needed to get us up the last few hills into Astoria, the first big town in Oregon.
Astoria is home to the 4 mile long Astoria-Megler truss bridge, the longest (continuous) truss bridge in North America. Completed in 1966 for the princely sum of USD24m, it replaced a ferry service which was frequently disrupted by adverse weather conditions (FACT).

Another pertinent fact: Astoria, OR was the location for "The Goonies", a 1985 Brat Pack classic.
