“Steam Power comes alive” |
The side-wheel paddle steamer Waimarie plied the Whanganui River for 50 years carrying passengers and freight until she sank at her moorings in 1952. She lay submerged in the river for over 40 years until she was raised. Now this lovingly restored steam powered vessel gives daily 2 hour excursions up the river. The vessel has two saloons, one has cafe facilities serving Devonshire Teas etc plus a good selection of wines and beer. On top there is a canopied deck and an open observation deck. Inspection of the boilers in the engine room is invited especially if you are handy with a coal shovel. Rest rooms are in the sidewheel housing (fun!)
The vessel departs from the Whanganui Riverboat Centre, just a few steps from the main street. The Centre also has a small museum featuring old time river activity and a workshop where other boats are being restored.
Tours depart at 2pm daily over summer and reduced sailings in the winter. We paid NZ$30 per person with no mention of concessions.
