After 4 months living in Perth we finally set out on our big drive across Australia! So after cleaning out our apartment we packed up our trusty 89 Camry and headed for the open road. First stop on the open road: Big W (Australia's version of Walmart). We knew we wanted to save money along the way so we decided to buy a tent and air mattress. The tent (the smallest, cheapest we could find) cost only $20!! Just what we wanted!!
Our first night was spent in our tent...bummer since it was dark and rainy when we set it up. Not the best start to our trip. The lady running the park took pity on us since it was so uncomfortable, and she waived the camping fees. With this nice change of fortune, we then set out for the Walpole Nornalup National Park for it's famous Valley of the Giants Treetop Walk.
The Valley of the Giants allows you to see the world the way the birds do... by walking up into the canopy of the treetops. The trees are huge Karri trees, with trunks that are about as straight as the shortest distance between two points. At the highest point you're around 50m above the ground and you definitely feel it. People with a severe fear of heights may not like this, especially since the bridges you walk along sway quite a bit. I thought that just added to the full feeling though. The views were amazing and the sensation of being at the top of the trees was quite unique. We'd definitely recommend this area to anyone.
From here our next stop would be the beautiful "Porongurups", but I'll save that for the next entry.
