It was Sue's day of so we decided to make the most of it and do the tourist thing starting with Waitomo Gloworm Caves in Waitomo (just incase that wasn't already obvious enough?!)
When the weather is sucky in New Zealand ...especially the North Island there is little to do but the caves were ideal. We did a tour around the caves thankfully in a really small group with a tour guide with an attitude! We got a boat up the river in the cave where we saw thousands of gloworms....glowing ( :-) ) The water had risen really high due to torrential rain the night before and at 9 am that morning the boats were underwater!!!!
Next stop, altough an impromptu one was at an Angora Rabbit Shearing Show, we were highly disappointed to discover that the show wasn't until a lot later on in the day, but they still brought one of the rug look-a-like beasts out for us to see. Gretel (the rabbit) was on her best behaviour- pictures will be on show asap.
A personal highlight of the day was the Kiwi House to see the most intelligent bird on the planet...not! you can easily see why they should be extinct, poor eye sight, can't fly, can't run and are nocturnal, their beak is too big for its body and always run into objects. Bit like V on a good night out :P !!!!
The day before we were due to leave Hamilton for Rotorua we had a lovely lunch with Sue and Blair before attempting a trip on the Waipa Delta (supposedly a must do in Hamilton) but the only day we had decent enough weather to go on it they were shut!! Typical! Never mind perhaps on the way back up.
We looked after the boys in the evening, taking the opportunity to have a master class in making pizza, gorging on popcorn, worms and chocolate and watching Shrek 2. A night enjoyed by all and the boys were even in bed by the time the folks came home!
Time to leave for Rotorua, huge thank you to Sue and Co for putting up with us.
