The trip took about 1 1/2-2 hours from Saigon. We took a shuttle that was similar to the American "Blue Van." They either pick you up from the station or from your place. The van held up to 18 people and was air-conditioned. The cost was 50 VND each way, which is equivalent to about 4 bucks. It was the off season so there weren't very many people. Along the beach side were nicely paved, wide streets that were completely empty. It was like a ghost town. We rented some chairs, table and umbrella for 50 VND a day. We brought our own food and snacked, played in the sand, swam in the water and relaxed for two full days. We didn't get too tan as dark people are not considered attractive here. Many Vietnamese people like to stay very pale. They use scarves, sleeves, gloves, hats and umbrellas to hide themselves from the sun. I did get a little tan but it didn't feel as satisfying when I used to tan in the US. The waves were really calming and the sand was untouched. It was nice not having to share the beach with big, noisy families. It was peaceful. It wasn't too sunny or hot and it was very breezy. I love beaches - the sand, the waves, the water, and the sun. To be able to relax all day and not have to worry about anything is something awesome. Naps. Those are nice too. It was definitely a nice break from the noisy, dirty city but it was also nice to be back. There wasn't much of a night life in Vung Tau. We walked to the park and the port every night and wandered around town drinking cocktail juices or having ice creams. The people we stayed with are friends of my mom's. It was like a small town - they knew everyone. Next time I visit, I'd like to use the speedboat. It costs about 120,000 VND and sounds like a lot of fun.
