Visited the medieval hill town of Volterra. What a windy bus ride to get there. On the way though, we enjoyed many classic views of the Tuscan hill side. It really was just like the postcards! We decided to stay one night, and that in a recommended seminary. (which offered rooms like a hostel would). There weren’t any nuns or monks there that we could see, but the man who checked us in got easily flustered, muttering away in Italian, when he discovered we hadn’t made a reservation. But, it was okay, because we easily got a room. We did have a good laugh about that though. The halls of the seminary residence were huge vaulted cloisters. The streets of Volterra were of cobblestone, with tall medieval buildings and mysterious narrow alleyways. We ate dinner at a local pizzeria…a husband and wife team. The husband made endless conversation with his wife as he whipped pizzas in and out of his big brick oven. No English spoken there! Good for us to experience. We mostly strolled the streets of this town and enjoyed the views from its walls overlooking the surrounding land.
