While we were up there, we hiked into Kilauea Iki.  A lot safer than the fuming Halema'uma'u crater, Kilauea Iki erupted in 1959 spewing lava almost 2000 feet in the air and turning the crater into lake of molten rock.  The crater has cooled down since.
