We drove from South Lake Tahoe to Virginia City, NV in about an hour and a half. Kristin and I have both been to Virginia City before and have enjoyed it. This time we wanted to share the experience with our kids -- it was a blast.
When we arrived most of the streets' shops were closed and the palce was cold and quiet. It wasn't long when things started to open up and the place came aline.
We visited a mine that was accessed in the back of a pub on main street. We took the tour and the kids enjoyed the trip in the dark mine.
We then walked up and down the street and finally found the visitors center where we bought tickets to ride the train.
We headed down to the train station and boarded the cold windy train. You see, we thought that the weather was going to be warm; we don't know why, but we thought that by the end of May Tahoe and Nevada were warm enough to not need a jacket or even a thick sweater -- we were very wrong.
While almost freezing to death we enjoyed the train ride on the same tracks that the train card and engines that were in the Sacramento Train Museum rode on. We saw many gold mines to the east and the west of the train tracks, each one with its own story and statistics of how much gold and silver the mine had yeilded in the mid to late 1800s.
We then got some food at a BBQ and enjoyed the Memorial Day Parade that came right down main street. It was nice to see so many patriots in the parade as well as the largest motorcycle that I have ever seen in my life.
We then went and visited the four story school house. Collin and Aaron sat at some desks and Collin had a fun time pulling on a long rope that caused the school bell to ring.
We then went to tour another mine and then called it a day and drove back home to South Lake Tahoe.
