Well its been a while since i have added an entry. I have been in Vang Vieng for a while now. Maybe around ten days. There is heaps to do here ! Ive been Rock climbing, hiking, checking out caves, swimming in lagoons & relaxing. I have made some real good mates here as well. Have also been tubing a couple more times.
Rock climbing was amazing, Vang Vieng is ment to be one of the best places in Aisa to climb. We got up early in the morning and were picked up from our guest house. We drove for around 20 minutes to the foot of the Mountain you could see from our guest house. There was a group of 6 of us with a few guides. The only climbing i had done prevesly was indoor so this was pretty new to me. We climbed for most of the day having turns spotting each other. I felt i did ok. i found it a little harder on the overhangs but other than that it was wicked! I forgot to take my camera so i have no photos but i can tell you it was amazing ! We did not get back to our guest house until it was dark so i was pretty stuffed after the day.
I rented a moto bike for a couple of days as well to visit some caves that were not so clost to the village. It was a little hard to start with getting usted to driving on the right hand side of the road but i did not have any accidents. There are hundreds of caves around Vang Vieng. Some of them were crazy. All of the mountians around the village are quite unique. From the base to the top they are pretty much virtical. I am not sure but it seemed to me like the stone was volcanic as well so that might explain why they are the way they are.
There are also many fresh water lagoons. It was amazing how fresh and clean the water was. The crystal clear water was an amazing blue colour. Sort of irridencent ! You could see below the surface for metres ! There was an aboundance of fish everywhere as well. It was very refreshing to swim in ! We went to this awesome spot the other day. There was a swimming lagoon where you could swim right into the caves. We could only get so far in because we did not bring a torch but it was so cool.
The rest of the information about Vang Vieng i copyed and pasted from Wikipedia because it is interesting.
Vang Vieng today is mainly a backpacker town. The main street is littered with guest houses, bars, restaurants, internet cafes and tour agencies. Almost all the restaurants have large televisions playing Americansitcoms (usually Friends), and recent films on a rotational basis. One of the main attractions of the town is inner tubing on the river. Whilst floating downriver there are several places to stop, mostly small family-owned bars or just simply an enterprising local with a bucket filled with ice cold bottles of Beerlao, and also several good spots for jumping into the river from the bank or a specially-constructed bridge. Careful on the 10 meter high swing - it's common to perforate your eardrum and do permanent damage to your hearing if you land the wrong way. During the wet season, the river can be a series of raging rapids, but during the dry season, some of it is little more than a trickle.
One of the main features of the town is a long mostly unused airfield runway parallel to the river. It was used during the Vietnam War by the Air America's planes. The now disused airstrip in Vang Vieng was then called "Lima site 6".
