The Rhine gorge (canyon) is close to the source of the Rhine. It can be reached only by train - just 25 minutes from Chur. We chose to get off the train in Valendas and hike back to the next station (Versam) - roughly 2-3 hours walking (faster when without children).
The track goes through some of the most spectacular sections of the Rhine gorge with cliffs several hundred meters high on both sides of the river. The Rhine gorge is also a very popular place for river rafting.
Lately, a few barbeque places have been installed on the way - unfortunately we didn't know, so we didn't bring anything (but we'll do so the next time!). The hike is easy - only some smaller elevations. There a few places, though, where you better take smaller children by the hand. We brought our picnic and enjoyed that in a lovely meadow - with a view to the gorge and the mountains above Flims in the background. Our friends from Germany who made the trip with us seemed as impressed as we were on the first trip.
