Exploring Rochester, NY

We were invited to visit Rochester, NY to learn more about an employment opportunity for B with the University of Rochester's department of otolaryngology. All three of us (B, 7-month pregnant L, and 2-year old G) flew up from Baltimore, in order for B to interview and for us all to get a chance to see the community.

U of R, located in west Brighton, NY, is a private university offering a full range of undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs. The university put us up in a hotel in nearby Pittsford, NY. Based on some advance research, we knew that the Brighton and Pittsford public school districts are the top performing districts in the greater Rochester area, so these are the towns we would most want to explore for potential neighborhoods in which to settle if B is to accept a position there.

Rochester, NY has about 220,000 residents... while Monroe Country has about 735,000 residents in the surrounding area, including the city. Rochester resides on the shores of Lake Ontario, the Genessee River, and the historic Erie Canal. This area has among the best cost of living indexes based on the affordability of homes and real estate.

The top employers in Rochester are U of R / Strong Health, Wegmans Food Markets, Eastman Kodak, and Xerox. Some other companies of note with corporate headquarters in Rochester are Bausch & Lomb, Paychex, Hickey Freeman, and Constellation Brands.
