Hendersonville North Carolina is just south of Asheville and is part of the gateway to the Appalachian Mountains. It's a great location to visit and base your vacation from and in easy distance of many of the areas attractions.

I'd like to say there was skiing at Maggie Valley, but the only time I've tried skiing was a week after winter rain and I more or less Tobogganed on my backside down the icy slopes.   However, there are other year round outdoors and vibrant arts community.

Fishing, Fly Fishing,  Hiking,  Kayaking are all activities that can be practiced year round; however, in winter, be well prepared for environment.  The winds, snow, rain, can come without warning, and if you are not properly equipped you may suffer the direst of consequences.  The Davidson River, Pisgah National Forest, DuPont Forest,  Mills River, Lake Lure, many  areas too numerous to list all offer the great outdoors experience. These are within easy striking distance of Hendersonville.  Most rafting services shut down in the winter and resume operating in the Spring.

There is a vibrant Arts and Theater community in the area and is not just limited to Asheville, there are several theaters one of which dates to the 1940's.

The Flat Rock Play House, Hendersonville Little Theater and Porter Center (in Brevard) all offer local productions of plays and off Broadway style productions.
