New York is known for many things: outstanding museums, world-class theatre, magnificent architecture, a rich history and some of the best shopping and dining in the country. One may not be aware that Manhattan is also one of the most pet-friendly cities in the world. This has always baffled me, as New York seems to be more cement than grass, with disagreeable weather ranging from humid summers and wet, often bitter winters. This just means cashmere sweaters and nylon booties for fashionable urban domesticates. While the city can accommodate many pets, it’s dogs that rule this town. I’ve yet to see public ferret-runs or stores featuring the latest gear for rabbits, but I have seen a few birds perched on shoulders and an iguana, so one never knows.
