Arrived in Mongolia after a 2 night train journey from Ikutsk in Siberia. Left temperatures of 1 degree to arrive in Mongolia to a temp of 25 degrees. Very nice surprise. Spent the first 2 nights in a traditional Ger Camp in the national park which was lovely. The Gers are round felt tents which can be packed up and transported to another location by the normadic Mongolians. The little stove in the centre of the Ger was our only heating and the fire was lit every 4 hours during the night apart from day 1 when they forgot. Lee and I were so cold that we woke up at 2.30am and Lee done a 'Ray Mears' and got the fire going from just a burning ember. Mind you, he got it going a little bit too well and just about melted the entire contents of our Ger - me included. We had to sit on the Ger step to cool down, but we did get to see the lovely clear Mongolian sky - billions of stars etc.
Spent day 2 with a traditional Mongolian normadic family for lunch which was lovely. Tasted lots of 'delicacies'........
Could take or leave Ulaan Baatar the capital city which we found to be dirty and sometimes quite seedy. The funniest thing we seen was the kind of things they sell of the street - lots of tables with a normal telephone on with a big ariel sticking out of the back - pay phones Mongolian style! 100 T for a call.
We are now in Beijing and will fill you all in on whats happening in a few days.
Love to you all
Jan and Lee xx
