I am a primary school teacher doing some voluntary work in a rural village in Tanzania with an amazing charity called Village Africa, organised through a company called PoD (Personal Development Overseas).

The new secondary school - one classroom finished, one almost complete and a third just getting started.
Kindergarten are very grateful for their new desks but what they need now is a teacher. Can you imagine expecting 5 years olds to stay in a room like this all day?
Local headless woman
The strength of these kids astounds me. This sack was full of rocks. I couldn't even lift it onto my head!
Mama Maragaret deseeding sunflowers.
Sorry animal lovers, these are not pets... they are chakula!
The back of our house
Kids playing by the house
The Yamba house
The big arrival in Milingano, what a welcome!
Kirstie dancing with the locals gathered to welcome us on our arrival.
standard one children writing letters to martins wood. I lent them some pencil crayons and some of them didnt know what to do with them!

Cold but tough kids in Yamba
My standard 3 class
kids insisting on carrying our bags home after school in Milingano
football with the ball kirstie brought over - usually they use one made out of plastic bags! They enjoyed this much more but I think it must've hurt kicking it with bare feet!
Najenjwa doing extra writing outside the staff room hoping to get another gold star!
Me looking goofy with a baby

Unusual lizard on the way up to Yamba.
Cute Yamba kids.
Melania and Joyce in the kitchen.
Local girl carrying sticks
Monkey chilling out in Pangani, enjoying the view!
The road on the way to Lushoto. A tree fell down and its roots dragged away half the road with them!
Ow!ow!ow! Carrying a bucket of water on your head from the river to the house is harder than it looks. No wonder poor little Joyce is so tiny, she carries about 4 buckets a day. Don't know how she manages it.
86 happy kids from Standard 1 after recieving a pencil each bought with the money raised at home.
Kids are so creative! The sound from this home made glockenspiel was amazing. The beater was made from the sole of a flip flop!
Joyce washing the dishes surrounded by ducklings.
another long dusty road
Could this not be the next big thing in fashion? It even matches my shirt!
Joyce and Melania doing the weekly wash.
My standard 4 classroom - I will never complain about the mobile a Martins Wood again!
Morning chores - standard one sweep their classroom with leaves before classes start.
Pupils carrying bricks to the new secondary school building site.
I hope the pupils can concentrate with this view from the secondary school
The first complete secondary school classroom. Form 1 pupils will hopefully move in soon as they are currently studying in the primary school.
My standard 6 class busy at work on the new desks provided by money raised at Martins Wood Primary School, Stevenage.
Local kids
walking home from school like the pied piper as usual!
How moving is this? I'd just told them I was leaving. Some of the boys were the worst!
If you think she's cute to look at, you should hear her saying "Allisoni!" in her little high pitched voice.
Benati is one of the richest kids in the village. This is his bed... I'm pretty sure he shares it with his 2 brothers. At least they have a mosi net!
I got invited into this old couple's home only to find out they are the grandparents of nearly all the clever kids in the school.
