A friend of mine and I pulled into Tulum at some ungodly hour of the pre-morning and were ushured by a taxi driver to his recommendation of "the best hostel in town." After several minutes of knocking on various doors and windows went unanswered, we headed for "Casa del Sol," a hostel and Cabañas recommended to us by another traveller. We rang the doorbell at 3am and were immediately answered and welcomed in by friendly hotel owner Carlos, who to our delight spoke fluent English (as our Spanish was incomprehensible after nearly 28 hours on buses). He quickly settled us in to a very spacious and impeccably clean dorm with some of the most comfortable dorm beds I´ve encountered in my 6 months of travelling through Central America. The hostel itself is spacious and laced with green palms providing shade and a large rooftop terrace perfect for taking in the sunset. Included in the price (100 pesos or $US 10 for dorm beds, 250 pesos or $US 25 for private double rooms, and 300 pesos or $US 30 for cabañas) is a complimentary breakfast service as well as coffee, free drinking water, a communal kitchen, and free transportation to the spectacular white sand beach and royal turquoise waters of the Carribean ocean. It is conveniently located 300 meters south of the ADO bus station, one block off the main street of Tulum, or a 45 minute leisurely walk to the beach. Also provided is on-site laundry service for 30 Pesos and bike rental for 50 Pesos. The entire hostel from dorm rooms to kitchen to hot-water bathrooms is impecably clean. I will definitely stay here again when I return to Tulum. For reservations contact Carlos at 983 110 6664.
