“we paid 10RMB for them to tip a pot of luke warm water on the roof that dripped down slowly on our freezing bodies” |
We left Base Camp at 9am to go to Old Tingri. Our driver told us it would take 6 hours even though it's really close because the road is so bad we had to go around and use a different route (but he may have just wanted to dodge the officials and toll booths). We got onto the new road and found there was a road block as they were still sealing the road further on. We got there at 1pm and were told we would have to sit at the road block till 7pm. we drove off road and tried to speed by it but people ran in front of the car and made us stop and go back. Once we were allowed through, Old Tingri was just around the corner. We dumped our bags at yet another dodgy hostel and went and had dinner. There were a few drunk Chinese soldiers there, so we sat in the opposite corner from them and ordered Tibetan curries. There was apple pie on the menu and we mentioned we might order some. The waitress said "The apple pie is delicious, you should order some" so we said "Ok can we have some apple pie?" and she said "No, there is no apple pie".
After dinner we told the hostel we wanted showers, we paid 10RMB for them to tip a pot of luke warm water on the roof that dripped down slowly on our freezing bodies. They waited outside for us so no one could sneak in a free shower. The next morning we tried yak butter tea with breakfast (will never try it again) and head off to Kathmandu. On the way to the border we stopped at a small village and played with some grotty little children. One child had an abscess near his left eye and his grandmother begged us to help him. Edde got his first aid kit out and peeled the infected scab off and cleaned the cut out, leaving them antiseptic cream and band aids to continue with. We thought they didn't have medicine because they lived in the middle of no where but we went around a couple hills and there was a big city!
We got dumped there by our driver and we headed through the border city to find it full of Cadbury chocolate! Went through Customs and we were finally out of China, YAY!!!
