We planned to get up early to see Tikal at first light, so set the alarm for 4.15am for the bus at 5am. Luckily the electricity went off at midnight, which meant no fan, no sleep but lots of sweat. It also meant that when we stopped trying to sleep and got up in the dark the electric shower didn´t work. Spot on.
After a sticky start it was a great trip. Tikal is amazing, definately worth the pain. Because we were there early it seemed like we had the place to ourselves. It´s a massive site in the middle of the Guatemalan jungle. Jimmy M wouldn´t like it. We climbed Temple V almost as soon as we got there, which at 150 foot gives you a view of pretty much the whole site. The climb is really steep and when you get to the top there´s a small ledge with nothing to stop people falling off. Chesta nearly disgraced himself before crawling over the top of the ladder to get down. The C-Team had shaky legs for the rest of the day. There´s a huge amount of ruins at Tikal and we took a whole day going round part of it. The ruins are breathtaking and on top of that we saw howler and spider monkeys, toucans, vultures, hawks, hummingbirds, lizards, locusts, beautiful butterflies, peccany and the world´s biggest centipede. Jimmy wouldn´t like it.
We drank gallons and sweated even more. We must stop sweating, no one else does it. For our picnic lunch we had sweaty cheese sandwiches.
