Arriving in Xian went from the longest smoothest road created, to the busiest streets on earth.  Lane markings are all optional and if you wish to drive up the hardshoulder chasing a police car at 80 mph thats fine.  Driving here is like starring in the chase scene in Ronin.  And our faces look just like Robert DeNiro's do in that sequence (if you haven't seen the film then it's one of absolute horror and fear).

We stole a member of staff from the Hotel called Han to be our guide.  Without him we are reduced to pointing.  After a short taxi to the Terracotta army we arrived and seemed to have the place to ourselves.  This place is amazing, the size of 4 football pitches and they have only unearthed 1/8th of it.  The old peasant who was digging the well 30 years ago and discovered them was there signing books and smoking a long pipe.

After that we went to the hot spring at the bottom of a mountain that the old Kings used for having a bath.  The water comes out of the mountain so hot that it is almost scalding.  After being offered to have a bath here we declined (bit cold for bearing bodies) and went to downtown Xi'an with Han for lunch.

He promised to show us food that was so delicious your mouth would refuse to leave China.  We then were taken into a place that resembled an abbatior.  In the middle of the table on top of a gas burner was placed a rusty old bowl of soup/dishwater??  After it started to boil you were supposed to dip in your chosen food on a stick, cook, dip in a spicy peanut butter and devour.  We asked for beef whereupon a plastic bag of frozen beef scraps was plonked infront of us. To be fair we did try but to no avail as it was possibly the most disgusting thing I have ever eaten.  This from a man who until now only disliked sprouts!  Our guide looked devastated but we did our best to console him, and then scuttled offf to the nearest golden arches.
