Me, Lisa and Fiona headed off on our trip to Tasmania over a week and a half ago. We had flights booked out of Melbourne so we rented a camper van and drove the long journey from Sydney to Melbourne. We got a really cheap deal on the van, it was a standby so as long as we got it to Melbourne in 3 days we only had to pay a dollar a day and a $10 booking fee so we only paid $13 to hire it, class! I couldnt believe it when I saw it, we were expecting a bit of a crock but it was brand new and fully equipped with a toilet, shower, linen, cutlery etc. We could only get a 2 berth as the 4 berths had gone so I had to hide up the road while the girls went to collect it. You're not supposed to have more than 2 in a 2 berth but we chanced it anyway, it was grand. We headed down through Canberra and stopped off to visit the Parliament building. Not much to see in Canberra and I heard it was boring so I didnt mind making a flying visit. We spent two nights in the van, the first night we stopped in a place called Batesman Bay and on the second we stayed near the airport.
We met Lorraine, Noreen and another Donegal girl Melanie at the airport and jumped on the place to Tas. We flew into Launcestown and collected our 8 seater car. After loading up we hit the road and headed for the west coast. The weather was lovely leaving but as soon as we hit the famous Cradle mountains on the west coast the rain had set in. It was a long drive to our destination in Strahan and the roads are really windy that we were very tired when we arrived. It was too dark to pitch our tent so we booked into a hostel instead. On the way down we drove for miles without seeing another car or town, Tasmania is quite remote. The hostel was grand we had a double cabin and a 4 bed drom to ourselves. The next moring the girls left early on a cruise but I had a sleep in and went to visit some waterfalls instead. We headed off that day to the Lake St. Clair where we decided to camp for the night.. bad idea! It pissed rain all night and we nearly froze to death it was so cold! It was so funny when a possum got into our car and started eating our food, the girls were panicking and noone ever told me they were vicious so I tackled it and got the bag off it, thank god it didnt attack me! We decided to give up on the camping after that!! Which was a pity as we soon discovered that although the weather was crap here it got much nicer and warmer as we headed for the east coast.
We hit the road for Hobert the capital and booked in to a hostel called Allports. It was Melanies birthday so we headed for the Irish bar (as everywhere else was dead!) Being a Tuesday night the pub was also fairly dead but we had a fun night nevertheless. The next day we headed for Port Arthur and booked ourselves on the famous ghost tour. We stayed in a lovely beachside cabin where we were right in front of a lovley secluded beach with an awesome sunset. There were bbq facilites so we had a yummy bbq dinner. The ghost tour was a good laugh, I hadnt expected to be too scared but it was scary enough especially all the stories our guide told. After Port Arthur we made our way to Freycinet National Park which was awesome. We did a 3 hour walk to Wineglass beach and bay which was stunning. The walk was tough though! We stayed in 2 units in a caravan park that night. On our second last day we drove to the Bay of Fires which is very pretty. There was a lot of bush fires recently on the way up and you could say the damage they caused. We made it back to Launcestown that night and as the hostels were booked up we stayed in a motel family room. It was cheaper than the hostels so I wasnt complaining. In Launcestown we took a cable car tour, did a cable paraglide and spent the rest of the day by the pool as it was very hot. On the last night we stayed in a hostel and had an early night. It was a mad rush to the airport the next morning as we took the wrong road and the girls just about made their flight! They headed off to New Zealand and I headed back to Sydney before heading up the East Coast.
