After a beautiful month on the relaxing beaches of Maui we where ready to hit the road. We arrived back to San Francisco a day before my 24th birthday and it just happened that a few of my old friends where in town! After a few nights of going to bed in the wee hours of the morning, we were ready for the relaxing rhythm of the highway. The sound of the highway was all we would hear for the next three weeks. Our plan was to drive from San Francisco down to LA, visit with Annah for a couple days, pick up the PUG and then head on over to the big town of Taos, New Mexico for Christmas.
Taos is truly a magnificent wonder. It was extremely cold the entire time we were there. The day after we arrived a monster storm came through followed by some of the most majestic sunny days I have ever witnessed. There is nothing like fresh snow on a beautiful sunny day. A few days before Christmas we went snowshoeing into a forest to cut down a Christmas tree!!! I loved it! What a novel idea, cutting down your own tree. I have to thank Peter’s mom, Annie. She gave me a Christmas from a storybook. We ate homemade Christmas cookies all week, decorated the tree, I helped Linda (Jakes mom) hand make Tamales on Christmas Eve and we went to the Indian Pueblo on Christmas night to witness the huge bonfires that the Pueblo families build and light.
Our next big venture was driving from Taos to Tahoe for New Years Eve, via Moab, Utah. Peter’s sister Zoe and Brother Alex accompanied this trek. Moab was very frosty but absolutely beautiful. We all agree we preferred the 30 degrees compared to the 100+ degrees it can reach in the summer. The next day of travel was the longest and most lonely stretch of road any of us had experienced. 15 hours after we had left Moab we reached the warm fireplace of our Tahoe home. Thank God. I think even Lucy, who slept most of the way, was loosing her mind a little. Jake and Taylor arrived the next day and we commenced full relaxation, excluding an extremely high intensity sledding day in which Peter continuously injured himself.
Peter and I are now back in San Francisco for the rest of the month of January. Trying our hardest not to spend very much money. We are applying for Visas, copying as many documents as we can tape to our body, making reservations and reading one travel book after another from a pile that could reach the ceiling. We leave for Rio on February 4th and then don’t slow down.
