We headed off on the bus to Tambillo, which was only 45 mins away. From there, we jumped in the back of a pick-up truck, and headed up into the mountains to the Santa Maria animal sanctuary. It sounded like a really cool place to volunteer, and given how much I'm liking S. America so far, I wouldn't rule out returning in the future to take part in a project like it. We went really high up into the mountains, right up into the clouds, and arrived at the small hut (we even saw a lion on the way in). We jumped off the back of the jeep, and were greeted by an Australian fella who was working there. He told us we'd have to ask the driver to wait for us. I assumed he meant while he showed us round. Not so much. "Sorry guys I'm far too busy to show you round today, you should have phoned ahead." And then he went back to his cup of tea. Right then, back to Quito. That didn't go so well for us.
