We found Syros to be a lovely island, and we thought it looked like there was quite a strong Venetian influence. Some buildings were built right against the sea, with little balconies overhanging the waves. The houses were bigger and more colourful than the other blue and white islands we'd been to, and the place had quite a relaxed air to it.
Perched upon the top of a massive hill was the Church of Anastasis, which we thought would take up a few hours of our time. Our 45 minute climb in the mid-afternoon heat was rewarded with greta views over the port and town, and went into the church. Greek Orthodox, and obviuosly quite a tourist attraction, the interior was cluttered up with all sorts of things, candlesticks, paintings, all sorts of decorations... We headed back to the port that night, to have another go at the overnight ferry to Turkey..
