Sylvan Lake is about ten miles west of Red Deer on Highway 11, and is a pleasant spot to spend a hot summer day. There is a good sand beach,  waterslides,  a marina with  boats and sea doos for rent,  and  a fun restaurant  called "Pete's at the Beach,"  recommended by the destinations magazine for Westjet, one of Canada's two major airlines. In the summer, the beach is known for motorboat races, and in the winter the ice is cleared for hockey, ski doo races, and ten mile speed skating races. The lake is shallow and in the summer boaters are allowed to  anchor their boats offshore  free of charge.
