Sydney
The short flight to Sydney again passed relatively without incident. And to be fair the kids were just brilliant. The problem is its only 6 hr 15 mins from Singapore and that meant waking both kids up in the middle of their sleeps. That was only going to go one way.
Charlie contracted what appeared to be a jet lag induced version of Tourrettes. Unable to say anything other than ‘poo’ or ‘wee’. And Issy was just all over the place.
Having arrived at the Sheraton and got checked in we chilled out for a couple of hours and then realised it was Australia Day (ie Aussie independence day) and there were loads of things going on all over Sydney. So..we got our stuff together and headed out.
It was very hot and we spent a lot of the time looking for shade. But on hearing it was 0 degrees and snowing in London we felt much better.
We walked down the the harbour, round the opera house and then round the harbour and up through the botanical gardens with lots to see and do on the way. There were fighter aircraft screaming overhead, fruit bats the size of labradors everywhere, a display of Australian fire engines since the start of the C20th, bands and a bunch of other stuff. We ended the day down at Darling Harbour where Charlie loved it, going on the bouncing bungee chair, going on the boat with mum, playing in the water fountains, going on the slide and climbing frame. But at the end of the day he was shot through and ready for bed. Issy on the other hand was on for action all the way through the day and buzzing at 8pm when should theoretically have been ready for bed. We arrived on the Friday and was Monday morning before we were able to move into our house.
Balmoral Beach
Having got into our new house things were much more relaxed all round. And a beautiful house it is too. The additional space and the ability to not have to eat from a room service menu defo contributed to a general relaxation of the mood. Paddington feels very much like the Islington of Sydney, trendy, central, upmarket, busy and house prices that have gone through the roof. Charlie was in hyperventilation mode when he saw the volume of ‘big boy toys’ that were his..all his..for the duration of the stay. Surfboards and skateboards in particular preoccupied him for the first 72 hours.
Shark Beach
Vaucluse is in the Eastern Sydney suburbs about 15 minutes drive from our house. A small, clean beach in a residential area and a corking spot for a picnic at the end of the working day. This is why I think we thought coming here would be good. To be able for me to have a full day at work and then still get back in and throw some stuff into the back of the car and go to the beach and have a picnic with the kids.
Bondi
Bondi beach on a busy sunny summer Sunday is a sight to behold. Thousands of buff bodies in the surf and thousands more on the beach. A beautiful beach, a bona fide beach culture, big surf, the whole deal. Nowhere near as wonderful as it might think it is, its nonetheless a hell of a place to have on your doorstep in a City.
And the kids loved it. Too hot but great fun.
