After a day in Sydney I decided to join Andy for a couple of days in the Blue Mountains before departing for Melbourne and the Australian Grand Prix.
Arriving at Andy's hostel at 8.30am we caught a bus to central station. Trains leave here frequently so we caught the 9.50am train. We had decided to head for Wentworth Falls on the advice of a some one from the Overalnd track who live's in the Blue Mountains. On arrival at Wentworth Falls I booked into the YHA hostel at Katoomba whilst Andy will stay with a friend he met on the overland at Springwood.
After leaving our packs at the visitor center which is about 1.5 klms from the station we headed for a 2 hour walk around the area.
The Blue Mountains are heavily forested, and the air a blue tinge and sweet smell from the Eucalyptus.
Wentworth Falls are named after William Wentworth who was one of 3 people to concour the mountain range in 1813. The viewpoints around this area provide superb views of the falls and into the Jamison valley far below, all very dramatic. After a couple of hours looking around we collected our packs and headed for the station, where I headed to the YHA at Katoomba and Andy headed back down the line to return the following morning about 8.30am.
As many of the worthwhile sites are at Katoomba we started our day here with a visit to the is famous `3 sisters', these are huge rock pinicles which stand out from the side of the canyon at the top of the giant stairway. These 3 rocks take their name from an Aboriginal dreamtime story in which the Katoomba people where loosing a battle against the rival Nepean people.
We also went on the scenic railway which is the steapesr railway in nthe world and takes you to the valley floor which has boradworks through prestine temperate rainforest. The Sceniscender cable car takes youi back to the top of the canyon, both make for some dramatic views.
From here we made our way back to the station and headed a short distance up the line to Blackheath and the view points at Echo Point which are just as dramatic but less crowded. We aslo walked some of the paths to Goverts Leap lookout before returning to the station.
It is at this point that Andy and I now go our seperate ways as he is staying on for another day whilst I have an early start to catch a flight from Sydney to Melbourne for the Grand Prix. I had a great time traveling with ASndy and look forward to catching up with him when I get back to the UK.
