Carnaval!!!

The way from Potosi to Sucre was very nice indeed. Not only was the scenery beautiful, but the whole way there was paved. That is impressive because only about 20 percent of the roads in Bolivia are paved.

Ah, Sucre....well this is the city that everyone had talked about as being the most touristy and beautiful city in Bolivia. Our bus ride from Potosi was only three hours, a very short ride! We got to stay at the HI hostel in town, but it really didn`t live up to Hosteling International standards....but hey, it was a place to sleep. The next day we went to the town of Recoleta which has a great mirador of the city and we visited the cemetery, but on the way back we were attacked by carnavalists!!! Well, it was carnival time in Bolivia, and it got to us on a sooner date than expected. It officially started in the city of Sucre on the 1st of February, but the 31st of March is fair game too! So what does this entitle, you might as yourself.....a whole lot of water and then some foam!!! Vendors (mostly women and children) sit out on the street corners with baskets full of water balloons and they sell bags of 10 balloons for only one boliviano!! On the second day of being bombarded, we decided to join in on the action and get people back! We bought ourselves lots of bags of balloons and had a blast!!! We do have to say, that some of the men throwing balloons tended to be a bit too aggressive, throwing them too hard and sometimes straight to the face!!! And the foam on the face is not a lot of fun either!!!
