After Livigno we made our way down through Italy and to Lake Como. We intended to spend a night or so there but couldnt find a campsite so we went onto Lake Orta. The lake was beautiful, but the campsite (at Orta) was a bit short of facilities - unheated bathrooms in -ve degrees is no fun...
Next day we went to Stresa on Lake Maggiore to spend a final day with my brother and family. A word of warning - Stresa is not very camping car friendly so if you driving one find a backstreet to park on. We took a boat tour on the Lake and visited a couple of the Islands, Pescatori and Bella (both probably spelt wrong which will be standard operating procedure for anyone still hanging in as a long term reader of the blog). Both islands are very small and reminded us both of Venice with somewhat run down and ramshackle buildings extending over the whole islands.
They are both very pretty though, sitting on the calm waters of the lake which has mountains either sides and with a backdrop of the snowcapped alpes. We were told you can ski above Stresa but with the general lack of snow in the alpes there was no snow at all on the mountains.
Stresa itself has a very pretty promenade with a km or so of gardens fronting the lake. The town itself was nothing special, but in fairness we only had a quick wander through. We said final farewells to the family and headed south for the sun.
Dave.
