After a mad packing extravanganza, we flew to Stockholm where, apparently, EVERYONE speaks english!! We had to travel a lot when we got there because RyanAir is a big doody head and they put all their airports significantly out of the way so you have to spend 3x as long getting around than you expect to!!! So the airport was an hour south of the city and the campground was 30min north so we saw a lot of the country side, which is distinctly canadian looking. Very Green, very beautiful.
The camp was quite nice, right on a lake and surrounded by woods. They have a little store and a little arcade and an area to eat that's covered, which is nice when you are tenting! We set up on the top of a hill, suddenly realizing just how small Kevin's tent is and that we should have brought our own (we were planning to cycle and his packs up better but now we dont have bikes so we should have the bigger tent!!!) as well as our thermarests!! OUCH OUCH rocks!
Our first morning there I awoke with a sore trhoat but thought "it is just because I am dehydrated" but each day it got worse and I got stuffy and it turned into a full blown snotty mess of a cold. It didn't help that it was raining at night and was very swedishly cold and we were sleeping on hard hard ground! For our last night we rented one of their little caravans which was heated but I still spent all night trying to breath and blowing my nose!!! Enough about that, on to the fun stuff!!
The first day was the last day of the midsommer festival, which is a big deal in Sweden, and we went to the island of Skansen, which is an amusement park that is trying to keep the heritage alive. So there is a big park with old old buildings transported from all over Sweden and little mini villages and churches and glass blowers and reindeer meat (very good!!!). We spent allll day there and watched the swedish folk dancers. It involved a lot of circles and propositions and lots of blonde pigtails.Seriously. It was pretty much exactly what you'd imagine but cuter! There was a zoo there and we saw bears and bison and boars oh my!! There was a petting zoo as well, with the fuzziest bunnies ever "can I get one please please please" only in swedish... That is what I imagine every child was saying!
The next day we spent the whole day at the beach because I was sick and didn't want to do anything that required moving. We had bought a pack of 6 crackers the day before so we shared a cracker for lunch and shared one for dinner as well. But don't worry, a can of tuna and one apple was involved as well.
The next day we went into town to go to the modern art gallery. It was free and quite a good collection, a lot of famous pieces.
While walking around Stockholm afterwards the strangest thing happened. Scott ran into his old friend that he has knoiwn since Grade 5, Dave Laird!!!!! In the middle of Stockholm!! How weird is that?
While touring around the old town we decided that we needed some hot drinks so we went for some coffee and tea.... IN A 700 YEAR OLD PRISON!!! It was quite cool, we got our own little cell and sipped our drinks with the flicker of the candle.
The next day we walked around Stockholm some more before our flight to Paris which you will have to read in the next episode.... same sconic time, same sconic channel....
