- St. Gilles les Bains - aquarium complex that is basically an underwater zoo. 1-2 hrs.
Piton Ste. Rose - volcano erupted, lava came to church Notre Dame de la Lave
Hell-Bourg - Fresh mountain air and gorgeous scenery make this one of the most pleasant towns on the island - on the Cirque de Salazie
orchids - between hell-bourg & plataue de belouve - hike for about 2.5 hours. Pretty steep climb and very hot out. Not a long day of hiking, but thirsty work.
March de St Paul- Every Friday, U got the St Paul market with all the specialities of the isle and the neighbours isles. Piments, Fruits, Souvenirs and so on
PIC LA FOURNAISE (Volcano)
Mafate : very difficult to access. No road has been built, only walk paths. Being in the western part of the island makes it the driest of the three cirques. Small villages. Electricity - generators and solar energy. If you don't like hiking, you will have a splendid view from the Piton Mado, where you can go by car from St Paul. You'd better arrive there early in the morning before the fog appears.
Cilaos: Accessible by car from St Louis, but twisty road! Well-known for its 'ilets', small tablelands lost between gullies and cliffs like tiny islands. Thermal sources have made Cilaos famous all around the Indian Ocean. Cilaos embroidery. Particular type of lentil. Wine of Cilaos - very sweet wine, which you'd rather have as an aperitive.
Salazie: hour drive away from St-Andre, Salazie is by far the easiest to access. It also is the greenest...since it is the rainiest. Wonderful waterfalls, prolific vegetation, dramatic views
Piton de la Fournaise: Peak of blazing fire, because this volcano is still active. Desert area, with lunar countrysides. Cross 'Plaine des Sables' (Plain of Sands) at sunrise on the way to the volcano - an enchantment. Glowing colours of the sands change with luminosity. Better to arrive early in the morning (with very warm clothes), in order to see the panorama. Otherwise, you might be caught by the fog. The view of the craters in the sunshine is really beautiful from the 'Pas de Bellecombe'. Those who like trekking may climb the main crater in 5 or 6 hours, and even less for good hikers. Those who don't want to walk a lot may go down the 'Pas de Bellecombe' and climb the little crater, which is only a few meters high. But think about the way back, with this 'Pas de Bellecombe' to climb
On your way back from the volcano, call in at 'La Maison du Volcan', at 'Plaine des Cafres'. This museum is a must.
Forest of 'Notre Dame de la Paix' : Primary forest composed by huge 'tamarins des Hauts', endemic orchids that you will discover by taking the botanic path in the mountain
Cimetiere Martin. Pirate Oliver 'La Buse' (Buzzard) Levasseur buried here. Pirated the Indian Ocean from around 1720 to 1730. Finally caught in St. Paul and was hung there. His grave is often covered with coins, cigarettes and booze as part of black magic rituals by the superstitious Reunionnais.
internet cafe in Rue Juliette Dodu, is very friendly and the the meals are great.
Toboggan: Cafe On L'Hermitage Beach - L'Hermitage Beach behind the Novotel Coralia - Catch the bus to Filaos ,turn right and walk down to the Novotel. Turn left and walk down to the beach
