I knew that I was in for quite a bit of culture shock when I agreed to meet Pete and Sus in Southern Thailand, considering that the only foreign travel experience I’ve ever had was to a bar in Juarez, Mexico (5 minute walk from El Paso, Texas).Little did I know what I was in for going from the desert of New Mexico to paradise. Paradise came in the form of ocean water warmer than all the showers I took while in Thailand, sand softer than every bed I’ve had during the past few weeks, enough sun to almost eliminate the farmer’s tan I’ve been working on for the past 20 years, and most important of all cheap food and beer.
We began our tour of Thailand on the west coast in the town of Phuket, more specifically Patong Beach. The day we got there we knew we were not going to like the area very much. Instead of being able to relax we ran into hundreds of tourists and with the tourist came locals trying to sell anything imaginable. We decided to leave the town after only a few days and move on to our next destination.
We made our way to Krabi which ended up being one of the best decisions we made during my 19 day visit. While in Krabi we spent a majority of our time soaking up the sun. In addition to our beach days we also sea kayaked and took an island tour on a speedboat. Both adventures were some of the most exhilarating and awe inspiring things I’ve done in my life.
After Krabi we made our way over to the other side of the Thai Coast to the island of Ko Pha Ngan. Although it was a long day of travel we were rewarded with our very own bungalow no more than 50 yards from the beach. Our bungalow motivated us to do nothing and instead of exploring we decided to relax and take advantage of the numerous hammocks on the island. Our only motivation during our 5 day visit was on the night of the full moon. Once a month on the island of Ko Pha Ngan they have a gigantic full moon party on the beach. We were told that this party was a once and a lifetime experience and believe me if you ever have the chance to check it out be sure and take advantage.
Although it was a long and expensive trip I have no regrets. Southern Thailand was amazing. If the opportunity ever comes up to travel here take it and see Thailand’s beauty first hand.

Thanks Cliff "looser" Thompson! Considering that I (Sus) write most of the blogs I consider this statement an act of war. It's real easy to criticize us from so far away. I may look small but i'll kick your ass the next chance i get. Consider yourself warned!
