LANG TENGAH, TERRENGANU

Back in March there was a long weekend in which a Beth (a friend and colleague) and I went out to the east coast of Malaysia to an island called Lang Tengah. The islands off the coast of Terrenganu (the east coast) are known as some of the most beautiful islands in Asia. Crystal clear water, coral reefs, white sand beaches… life just does not get any better than this. I wasted away 3 days just lying on the beach reading, snorkeling with Beth, and drinking with the locals at the ‘happenin’ bar (we were the only ones there). We also spent some time in Kuala Terrenganu visiting Chinatown and eating some fantastic food from the mamuk stalls. Needless to say, I was fully relaxed when I got back to KL!

LABUAN & BRUNEI

Cheap tickets on Air Asia meant a trip to the duty-free island of Labuan off the coast of Borneo. Laura, Leon, M-A and myself headed there for a weekend of… well we weren’t really sure what was in Labuan, but we knew there was cheap booze! (since Malaysia is a Muslim country, the booze here is expensive. Any opportunity we have to bring back cheap bottles, we do!) As it turns out, there is not much to do in Labuan, so we headed for Brunei. This tiny oil-rich country was a short boat ride from Labuan and BOOM - we are in another country! The coolest part of Brunei was the boat cruise that took us around the floating village. Thousands of people live in these houses built into the water. There were even fire stations, gas stations, schools & mosques all IN THE WATER! It was definitely the highlight of the trip. Or was it the Baileys…J

SINGAPORE

My last long weekend of the semester was spent in Singapore with Janice & Beth (colleagues & friends from school). We did all sorts of touristy things – Clarke’s Quay, Chinatown (lots of shopping done here), the night safari, etc. I was able to meet up with Stacy – a girl I had met with Isabelle at Uncle Tans in December. She took us to a great restaurant with fantastic desserts, and even gave me my first taste of durian… STINK! I think I handled it well, but it certainly is an acquired taste.

On my way back from Canada I am stopping in Beijing for a week before starting school. I am so excited to see this part of China – the Great Wall, Tiananmen Square, Terra Cotta Warriors, etc. Other upcoming trips include: Cambodia in August for 1 week, climbing Mount Kinabalu at the end of August, and possibly a trip to Bali with Mom and Dad when they arrive in October. Despite the job situation, you can’t beat the travel opportunities!

Thanks for reading,

Jenn
