Review of Quinta da Regaleira

Words cannot do this place justice - you have to experience it

If you only have time to do one thing in Sintra, make sure this is it.  The Quinta was originally a private house built at the turn of the century by a true eccentric.  The interior was being renovates while we were there, but what we saw was pretty impressive. The house was designed by an Opera set designer, so that may give you hint as to the kookiness and  over the top ornatness you will see.

Without a doubt, the garden is the best bit.  Acres of follies, grottos, towers, dark tunnels that lead to a 30ft Tower of Initiation, fairytale, mythology, alchemy, astrology - its all there waiting to be explored.  We spent 2 hours in garden and very reluctantly left when the sun went down!
