"Drug traffickers will be punished by death."

The first thing I saw when we arrived at Changi airport in Singapore.  It was on the little welcome card that customs gave to us.  Quite welcoming I should say.

Things didn't get better all to soon either.  Next we came across a poster saying 'Shop Singapore. It's not just shopping it's our National Sport'  Scary isn't it?!  What am I doing here?  But Singapore was very much what we had expected:  Hot hot sun.  Super-expensive beer.  And subway trains that are cleaner than most operating rooms in most american hospitals.

Fortunately we arrived on the eve of Chinese New Year and thanks to the help of our generous flight attendants and the healthy supply of wine they fed us, we were ready to party.  The streets were packed with people, there were fireworks going off and bright light displays everywhere. We threw our bags into the hostel and made for the streets.  After about half an hour of following the crowds to where we hoped the party would be, we realised that we were surrounded by men.  Sober men.  I'm not sure what kind of party we expected but this was NOT it.

The next morning we left chinatown for little india to check out a different hostel.  It was awesome.  Going into little india felt like we had entered a whole new country.  The streets were packed with people out in the market and once again, we stuck out like sore thumbs.  The hostel we checked into will become one of the legendary hostels of this trip.  It housed about 70 people from all over the world and served beers at about 1/3 the price of the cheapest bar around.  Around 4pm, along with some of the Irish and British we started getting into the beers...next thing we new the party had begun.  We moved from our hostel, to a nearby bar, then to the 7-eleven after the bar's midnight last call.

Enjoy the pictures for now, and I'll be in touch soon when we get to Malaysia.  (now I'm sitting in the airport at Johor Bahru, Malaysia waiting to fly to Kota Kinabalu on Malaysian Borneo)
