I had to leave Thailand for a new visa after the stolen Passport fiasco, so looked at my options : I'd travelled to most of the neighbouring countries, bar Burma (with it's current troubles that wasn't an option) and Malaysia. I'd love to go to China but there was no way in the world I was getting a flight or visa with the Beijing Olympics. Then Singapore came to mind, I quickly emailed my school friend who I know is living there now to see if she’d be about and when she replied saying “yes, come stay!” I booked my flight...

..And I’m so glad I did (thanks Nicole! x ) as I love Singapore! There’s not loads to do here for a backpacker, but it is a welcome change from other countries in Southeast Asia as it’s acclimatised for Westerners, I can see why many ex-pats live here, I met lots of them meeting Nicole’s friends, it was nice to live a few days as ‘the other half live’ as Nic put it! Ha ha.

We went to the famous ‘Sentosa Island’ which is a man made beach for the locals to escape the city, not a patch on Thai beaches but a means to an end and worth visiting for the ‘Fish Reflexology’ alone - where “little” (not as little as I’d have thought!) fish bite your feet:

“These adorable little fish consume only the dead skin areas, revealing your smoother and healthier skin - the perfect way to exfoliate and pamper your feet. Following the "nibbling massage", our qualified foot reflexologists will rub and knead your feet to good shape.“

Double bonus was that the boys I’d been travelling in South East Asia with were in Singapore at the same time celebrating one of their birthday’s - which they always do in style! This year they dressed up as ‘The Business’. We drank Singapore Slings in Raffles Hotel, more drinks by the riverside, onto the bars at the Quay and met up with Nicole and her friends too.

I did the obligatory sightseeing which must be done around any major city, included seeing the Fullerton, the Merlion statue, Mr Raffles himself (in statue form), lunches, drinks and dinner at the Riverside, little India, little China, the shops, the spas; it’s a very liveable city!

We had one other great night out at the Ministry of Sound club which I wasn’t expecting to love - but did and danced all night as the music and décor was awesome and it had such a great atmosphere (bar a few territorial corners) with a mix or travellers, ex-pats and locals all dancing together.

A nice retreat and I’m looking forward to spending my last days on a Thai island before catching my flight home from Bangkok…
