Arriving in spotless Singapore was quite a shock to the system after travelling around Asia for the past month. Public lashings are still carried out for minor offences such as not wearing your seatbelt and dropping litter, and they'd probably pull all your teeth out if you were caught chewing gum. Our hosts for this leg of the journey were the lovely Vicky Coleman (an ex-Townley Grammar comrade) and her fiance Richard. Their apartment was by far the most luxurious accomodation so far, and the hospitality was unbeatable, although they have a slight rat problem! Thanks for putting us up guys xxx We also met up with Vicky FitzGerald, another pharmo friend of mine from uni who's working in Singapore - it's such a small world. We spent our first night on the Night Safari, beating the 'singapore shufflers' to get front row seats at the show. The highlights were the Flying Squirrels and the Fruit Bats, allowing Dan to try out Night Shot mode on his funky new Video Camera. Next morning we shared a jungle breakfast with some elephants and Orangutans (we had our own plates obviously). We spent the rest of the day wandering around and feeding the animals, taking far too many pictures of monkeys and stuff - our families can look forward to sifting through those!! We had the ubiquitous Singapore Sling at Raffles, it tasted like a very expensive sex on the beach but had to be done. Our camera died on the third day, refusing to display anything but a white screen - being in the techno-capital of SE Asia I suppose it happened in the right place. We got our 15 minutes of fame whilst sightseeing at the Esplanade. A camera crew approached us and asked us to do a turn for a pilot TV show. After bashfully describing what I considered the best parts of the male anatomy, Dan was asked to show his to the camera. Good job I said Pecs!
Getting out of Singapore proved more difficult than anticipated thanks to an administration error by Qantas/STA travel. With slightly raised blood pressure we made it on to the flight as standby passengers, and headed off to Bali.....
