We were the first customers
As you can see from the tag line, this restaurant was voted as the Restaurant of the Year by customers. I was eager to see what this restaurant had in store for us and whether it could to live up its expectation. It came as a surprise when we stepped into the restaurant and found out we were the first customers. Were we that early? It was already pass 7pm.
The owner - Bun Try
The waitress passed us the menu and we placed our orders quite promptly. After that, the restaurant owner, Bun Try striked a conversation with us. It was impressive as he could speak good mandarin. Apart from that, he was every bit the restaurant manager as he asked how we found out about his place. He reminded me of those managers in posh, 5 class hotel resaurants. It was only later that I found out he has been working as a chef in Europe, which explains his professionalism in dealing with customers. He later served us a complimentary cocktail with local honey, which was very nice indeed!
The verdict?
Hmmm.... The food was just.. ok. Since we were quite tired of having Amok, we did not order it. I wonder if it was a mistake on our part. Bun Try also expressed his astonishment when he found out we did not order Amok. I only found out later that the Amok served here seems quite legendary and has been featured on the television. His other famous dishes include spare ribs and roasted duck (which personally I was not very interested in since I could get it easily back home). We ordered:
- Angkor Palm Soup
- Set which consisted of Deep Fried Spring Roll and Dumpling, Papaya Salad, Sweet and Sour Pork and Curry Chicken.
The Angkor Palm Soup was quite heavy with generous servings of coconut milk. It tasted good at first but eating the entire bowl was a bit too filling for me. The food from the set was mediocre.
Perhaps anybody who goes next time can try the Amok and tell me whether it lives up to its tall order or not. :-)
The restaurant did slowly fill up after we came in. However, something seemed to be wrong with the air conditioning as we felt stuffy. Perhaps it didn't help that I had a splitting headache at that time too.
