We arrived late in Siem Reap, and crashed our early at the sister hotel of the one we stayed at in Phnom Phen. We got up at 4am the following morning, to watch sunrise over Angkor Wat for my birthday. It was cloudy and spitting rain when we got up, so there wasnt much of a sunrise, but it was still pretty spectacular watching it get light over the temples. We had a tuktuk driver for the day, who took us around the site. We had no idea how big the site itself was, and were also shoocked by the sheer size of the temples themselves. Some went up 4 or 5 levels, and you only realise how detailed the architecture is when you get upto the top. My favourite was Angkor Thom, with the main temple being the Bayon temple, with 50+ turrets, each with for faces carved on all sides, facing every direction. Nicks favourite was one that was so ancient, huge trees were growing on top, proving how old the temples are... Its pretty hard to describe, I will have to get the photos uploaded soon. By 2pm we were templed out, and although it would have been nice to go back for another day, we were suffering from temple overload, and 10 hours was enough. There are far too many to see in 1 day, but we managed to see all the main ones.

We spent the evening going to a few bars, had an awful meal (fishy coconut water soup) and then commiserating our poor choice of grub in a bar called Angkor What?, with a guy from the Bhagdad counrty club - a bizzare eveing all in all but pretty interesting!
