Today we hit all the tourist spots of Seattle. We were up bright and early and partook in some breakfast at Starbucks (well, when in the hometown of the company one must indulge!). We then wandered over to Pike Place Market and looked around the market with all the fish, flower and craft stalls. We watched the men throw the fish back and forth to each other, which was really entertaining before we went to the Aquarium. We also found the first ever Starbucks, which, apart from having a different frontage and people playing music and dancing outside, was just the same as any other Starbucks! The Aquarium was actually really good and the sea otters were really cute. However, we were missing an essential accessory at the Aquarium – a child. They were everywhere! We felt a little out of place and a little old to be there without a kid, but amused ourselves sufficiently nevertheless.
We then wandered down to the ‘historic district’ of Pioneer Square which has lots of red-brick and cast iron buildings so was quite cute. There was also lots of live music being played in the streets everywhere, mostly blues and jazz, so gave the city a fairly relaxed vibe to it which was cool.
We tried to take the monorail over to the Seattle Centre but it was broken (which made me pleased that we hadn’t actually ridden on it!) so we had to venture on a bus to take us there. We had to pay when we got off the bus which confused us no end but it was not actually as harrowing experience as anticipated after having got used to Thelma being around all the time!! All the buses have places on their fronts to carry bikes which is a really good idea. At the Seattle Centre we went up the Space Needle (which is the thing you always see in pictures of Seattle) and got a really good view of the Puget Sound bay and the downtown skyline. They do like to cram as many people as possible in the lifts up to the viewing deck and Charlie was wedged between two rather huge ladies which was pretty amusing as the person operating the lift kept asking people to move further into the lifts and poor Charlotte had a look of mild horror/apprehension on her face! The Needle is quite cool, however, once you have walked around once outside there is not much else to do so we returned to downtown and did some more shopping before stopping for a late afternoon drink, which I thought was well-needed!
This evening we are heading out for a ‘night out’ which should be good as long as I don’t fall asleep at 10 which I have been doing every night so far!
Then on to Vancouver tomorrow. Hopefully they’ll let us both across the border as it would be slightly unfortunate if they didn’t!
Distance travelled today – 0 miles.
Bearwatch – 0 – thank goodness!
(Oh, there are now also some photos on Day 8 in Las Vegas if you want to look and some more of Carson City (Day 9) and Redwoods (Day 11)).
