The boys went to the local school for the first time this week with our friends Nina (7) and Jake (5). It was Jake's first day too so it was lovely to see them all toddle off there together. They wore borrowed uniforms (very Christmassy red and green) with their compulsory hats and sun screen.

Their teacher was reassuringly called Mrs Bate, and was a lovely woman who made them feel at home. They had a lesson in the playground under the trees on their first day and she kindly took some pics of the occasion - look how close the sea is!

The school overlooks the ocean and when the kids get older they have the option of doing surfing for PE - ! The school (Scarborough Public School) is very small, in total there are 83 pupils (85 for the next couple of weeks though..). In Nina, Archie and Stanley's class there are 20 pupils, mixed year 1 and year 2.

The school year starts in January, which seems sensible, so the boys were starting at the beginning of year 2. Stan was thrilled to bring home a Harry Potter book as his first library book which he is is reading slowly and carefully (!).

In their classroom they have a vase full of foliage in which are hidden lots of caterpillars on their way to becoming Monarch butterflies which the kids are studying. They came home very excited to tell us that next week they are getting some hermit crabs as class pets!

We (the parents) were very excited to have some spare time for ourselves for a bit - Nance and I went straight to the pub (natch) and Jont and I went and saw American Gangster at a morning cinema screening - luxury!

The boys will be sad to leave their new friends in February. However, this is a great opportunity to experience a school in another country and compare it with their school in the UK and their visit to a school in New Zealand. Hopefully when we get to SE Asia they won't be too disappointed with getting their parents back as teachers again!

Don't know whether it's just the new school uniforms but Stan and Archie look like they're really growing up. They seem to have a real confident look about them - all wordly and knowing! "Nance and I went straight to the pub (natch) and Jont and I went and saw American Gangster at a morning cinema screening - luxury!" So Sam this implies you were in the pub before going to the morning cinema screening? Is this what they do in Australia - drop the kids off at school and go straight to the pub? Life plods on here.
