We arranged a tour guide for our 2-day stay.  We were surprised to find he was our personal guide - he picked us up from the airport, packed us into a 4x4 and off we went.  First stop was the Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary.  Orangutans only live in the wild in Borneo and Sumatra and this is one of only 3 orangutan sanctuaries in the world.  We learned about the "wild men of borneo" and the center and saw one of the feedings.

Next we drove - about an hour on paved road and then another on unpaved road (hence the 4x4) to get to a river where we were picked up by a motorboat for another 10 minute ride down the river to a lodge.  We stayed there for the evening. We spent the afternoon cruising on the river looking for wildlife.  We saw long tailed macaques, proboscis monkeys, and wild elephants!

The next day we left the lodge and visited the Gomantong caves on the way back to Sandakan.  The caves were interesting - it's where the harvest the bird nests used in bird nest soup.  But it was crawling with cockroaches and I was really freaked out.
