Whew!  So we made it out of wine country alive...but not quite well.  We got to San Fran in the afternoon and checked in to a hostel, the first of our journey.  We had a coed room with two other women and two other men.  The hostel was...interesting.  The beds were awful, but we'll get to that.  We checked in, tossed our bags aside and headed out to see some sights.

Going on what my cousin Steve had told us we knew we were having dinner at the House of NanKing.  But we'd seen a sign in the hostel for a happy hour with a glass of champagne and a half dozen oysters that we didn't think we could pass up...so we didn't.  Actually we went happy hour hopping and enjoyed ourselves before heading to China Town for dinner.

Okay, no one may have told you this, but EVERYTHING in San Fran is uphill.  Both ways.  Oy.  That's the last complaint I"ll give about the hills, cause honestly I LOVE that city.  Desipte what happens next in our journey :o)

We wandered thru Chinatown and loved it, knowing we'd have to come back the next day to explore the side streets more.  Found the restaurant with no problem, and sat down for an amazing meal.  My cousin Steve told me this:

When you go in, ask the person who takes your order, who happens to be the owner, it always is...ask him "What's good here."  He'll say "First time?"  You say "Yes."  He'll say "I'll take care of you" and whisk your menu's away to replace them with decicious food that he thinks are the best.  So we did this, and the only difference in what Steve told us and what the guy did, was ask "You eat seafood?" before "I'll take care of you."  And boy he took care of us.  So did the guy next to us - he knew since we had the calamarai that we were new and offered us some of his moo shu pork, which rocked too.  We were glad we got there around 6 30, because by the time we left the line was up the street.

Okay, so we wandered and played in the city a bit then headed to the hostel.  I had the worst nights sleep of my life.  The bed was awful.  I woke up so sore I hurt everywhere.  I thought it was just the bed, so we decided to start our day by doing a tour bus that you can get on and off, and using that as our cab to explore.  By the first stop, I felt awful.  I thought it was just the nights sleep but as the day went on it was pretty clear I had a fever and was really sick.  But screw it, how often do I get to San Fran?  I sucked it up, we went thrifting on Mission St, saw the sculpture from last years Burn at the Warf, walked a bit, bla bla bla...I don't remember it too much cause, well, I was sick.  When we got home I still insisted on going for sushi (Kiss sushi - really great fish, really bad rice, way too sweet and way overpriced).  When we got home we moved Josh's mattress down to mine (we were in bunks) and both slept on the one double mattress.  Before bed my temperature was about 103.  I took 2 Tylenol PM and crashed, but woke up  moaning with horrible stomach pains thru the rest of the night.

Okay so I'll save you the rest of the story.  Basically we had already booked a nice room at a real hotel for Saturday, so we went right from the hostel to the hotel, from bed to bed, and spent the rest of our San Fran vacation watching Law and Order:CI reruns.  Yay.  Had to actually stay an extra day cause I couldn't get out of bed.  Totally missed the Love Fest and Parade, the Blues Fest, the Folsom Street Fair...everything.  Ah well, this is one place we KNOW we'll be back.
