We have re-entered civilisation (otherwise known as California)! This morning we left Carson City and headed to Reno for a quick look around. This turned into a VERY quick look around as Reno was not half as interesting as we thought it might be. It is bigger than Carson City (which was a bonus as there were more stores) but the scenery etc was really dull and boring so we quickly zoomed off towards Lake Tahoe.

Lake Tahoe was really beautiful and we did a scenic drive around the west shore which went from the edge of the lake right up into the mountains above. I have discovered that Thelma is not so keen on hills. I think she may be a little lazy, but will soon lick her into shape! Today we had the top down for the first time as it is not quite so hot now we are further north and out of the desert. Unfortunately now we are both burnt! I have really odd marks where I missed spots when applying sun cream and both of us (but Charlie especially) have big lines where the seat belt crosses your chest. We look like a complete pair of idiots. However, we have discovered that the car appears to attract the attention of 15 year old boys. The combination of our stunning beauty and Thelma’s beautiful lines are just too much for them and cause them to whistle and shout when we drive past. Unfortunately we did not get the same reaction from the hordes of elderly people and their coach tours also driving around the Lake as well. Whenever we stopped to take some photos of the view the elderly also suddenly appeared. Strange.

I would not be displeased if I owned a cabin here as it is the perfect temperature in the summer and you can go boating on the lake or walking and biking in the hills. Then in the winter you can ski or snowboard. Pretty cool. There was still some snow on the hills high above the lake which seemed quite odd when it was hot and sunny where we were.

We then drove on to Sacramento and are sitting in another Motel 6. This one doesn’t have the internet either which is a bit annoying – I must have just been lucky in Beatty. I think I might try Super 8 motels next – all of them have wireless internet, but they are more expensive.

I think Charlie and I and our sunburn may venture out in a bit for a look around, but tomorrow we will definitely have the top up on the car until we look less pink!

(Just to reassure those at home, Charlie did not do any driving today and consequently we had no police encounters).

Distance travelled today – 194 miles.

Bearwatch – 0. But actually saw some bear warning signs which was rather exciting.
