Ancient ruins and cenotes go hand in hand because the Mayans built their cities around these sacred wells.
We visited a beautiful cenote after seeing Chichen Itza. I wasn't wearing my swimming suit, which was a BIG mistake because the second I got there, I wanted to dive in.
We visited another cenote before we went into Tulum. It was part of our 'Tulum Extreme Adventure.' This time, I was prepared and was able to snorkel. It was amazing... and cold!
Just a side note about the Extreme Adventure, because I highly recommend taking part in this activity or something similar because it's an experience you'll never forget! Don't be fooled by the words extreme and adventure because ANYONE can participate. Trust me! My mom hates heights and doesn't really like to try new things, but I talked her into participating (she had the option of not doing anything she wasn't comfortable doing). She had the time of her life. I was proud of her. The only thing she didn't do was snorkel, even though she attempted it, because we had to go under a tiny space in order to get to where we could really swim and she was too claustrophobic.
The first part of the adventure led us zipping across the top of the jungle on a zip line. Then we repelled into the cenote, which was just too much fun. Next, we zip lined into the cenote and finally came the snorkeling.
All in all, it was a great experience and our tour guides were awesome!

Travelgnomes, I booked my trip to the Rivieria Maya through Apple Vacations. However, we booked the Tulum Xtreme adventure at the resort, which is where we booked all of our side trips, so I'm not entirely sure which company we took it through because we did Chichen Itza, swimming with dolphins, and horseback riding on the beach as well. I googled 'Tulum Xtreme' to see if they had a website, which I couldn't find, but there was some interesting stuff that others have posted about their experiences. It was an all day thing - and worth it, but it included lunch and beverages throughout the day. The pamphlet I have suggests to contact the representative at the front desk for more information or to make reservations. And trust me, it was awesome! I have a few pics from the tour... check them out if you haven't already. Happy Travels, Libellula.

Thanks for the reply. I'll see what the resort has to offer. We're also looking to do the Chichen Itza or maybe just the Coba ruins. Horseback riding on the beach looks great. Did that many years ago before the area was developed. Thanks again.

Libellula. What company did you book the tulum extreme adventure with? It looks awesome. Was it an all day trip? Was your Chichen Itza trip through a different tour company? Thx Travelgnomes
