Lake Tahoe's annual Shakespeare Festival is in its 35th year. The program this year ran 5 weeks and featured both "Romeo & Juliet" and "The Taming of the Shrew." I saw Romeo and Juliet, in what I would describe as a packed "house." The setting was spectacular on Sand Harbor State Park's beautiful beach, with seating facing Lake Tahoe.

Seats run from $25 in the upper section of the small sand amphitheater, to $70 for reserved seating down in front. For the non-reserved seating, you bring or rent a beach chair. Reserved seats are wooden Adirondack chairs, with wide arms to rest drinks.

The evening I attended, I noticed some "pros" who knew just what to bring and just where to go when the gates opened at 5:30. They had their chairs, blankets, thermoses, all ready to set up in an flash. Within moments of walking in, they were sipping on mai-tais. I was accidentally sitting in the reserved section, so I ordered one, too!

The food and beverage service was provided by "Shakespeare's Kitchen," which provided wait service to the reserved section and al fresco tables for the non-reserved. Prices were reasonable. For dinner, I had "A Crab & Shrimp Louie Affair" for $17; it included a hearty salad of greens, crab, shrimp, tomato, egg and asparagus. There was a wide array of entrees including BBQ ribs and chicken to seared ahi tuna; also offered were hot and cold sandwiches including hot dogs, pulled pork, and marinated portobello. Desserts were offered during intermission, I took the berries in whipped cream for $6.
If you are without a vehicle, as I was, consider the "Globe" tickets, which include bus transportation from Incline Village, near the Rec Center.
A perfect evening all around!
http://www.laketahoeshakespeare.com/venue
