Towering to an impressive height of over 700 ft from below ground, the Glen Canyon dam straddles the Arizona/Utah border and is located 90 miles upstream from the Grand Canyon. It was built in 1956 to tame the all-mighty and effervescent Colorado river and to provide an oasis to the greater american southwest.

In sheer numbers alone, this mammoth structure of concrete and steel took more than 10 years to build, used more than 4 million cubic tonnes of concrete (that is a lot!), is over 1500 ft in length and generates power to light more than 30 million homes! If that isn't impressive, then take a free guided tour along its length and breadth to experience first hand how intensely magnificent it is.

Besides standing testimony to an enormous engineering feat, the dam project has also provoked controversies both politically as well as environmentally.

Amidst all its strengths and strives, it gave birth to Lake Powell and the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area that encompasses more than 1 million acres in area and provides mired opportunities for recreational water-based sports and activities.

The Carl Hayden Visitor Center holds exhibits, conducts tours, has cataloged the dam's historical making complete with video shows and bookstores. It offers visitor free tours and maps of the entire Glen Canyon National Recreation Area.

You will soon realize that Page, AZ has a lot to offer both in terms of natural and man-made wonders.
