Pig, Rat, Ox, Horse, Sheep, Monkey... Last year was welcomed the year of Pig, this February it begun the year of Rat. This year takes us back to the very beginning of the twelve year Chinese cycle, I mean we have gone from the twelve months of year of the Pig to the twelve months of year of the Rat. The traditional Chinese calendar is based on a twelve year cycle, each year being represented by a different animal. It counts the years in sixty year cycles, making use of combinations of two series of numbers.

A legend explains the sequence in which the animals were assigned. Supposedly, the twelve animals fought over the precedence of the
animals in the cycle of years in the calendar, so the Chinese gods held
a contest to determine the order.

All the animals lined up on the bank
of a river and were given the task of getting to the opposite shore.
Their order in the calendar would be set by the order in which the
animals managed to reach the other side. The cat wondered how he would
get across if he was afraid of water. At the same time, the ox wondered
how he would cross with his poor eyesight. The calculating rat
suggested that he and the cat jump onto the ox's back and guide him
across. The ox was steady and hard-working so that he did not notice a
commotion on his back. In the meanwhile, the rat sneaked up behind the
unsuspecting cat and shoved him into the water. Just as the ox came
ashore, the rat jumped off and finished the race first. The lazy pig
came to the far shore in twelfth place. And so the rat got the first
year named after him, the ox got the second year, and the pig ended up
as the last year in the cycle. The cat finished too late to win any
place in the calendar, and vowed to be the enemy of the rat forevermore.

Under the traditional system of hour-marking, each day is divided into
12 units (時辰). Each of these units is equivalent to two hours of
international time. Each is named after one of the twelve Earthly branches.
The first unit, Hour of Zi (子時), begins at 11 pm of the previous day
and ends at 1 am.

This year is Zolicek's and my brother's year, so wish you joy, joy a life in health!

April 18th, 2008 - It's a big year of changes to me anyway... I'm an Ox by the way... Zoelee is behind a development of my life which looks after a progress in our common future. As Philee said: "For about twenty years a head MaK"... Philee is even more patient than I, so let's see... Some people talking about afterbirth depressions, other just about hormones... but what kinda mother could let their child to cry all night long? What kinda test is it? I just get through very unexpected tests in the birth hospital... I'm not ready to any other yet, they was above my head, unforgotten even unforgivable! Who would like to know how strong or fragile is my heart? I cannot stand the sound of crying of anybody, even less if it is crying my kid. We were successful in six weeks of Zolicek's age and got the three hours interval between meals... a day by night...

April 26th, 2008 - Today we are seven weeks old, and nights have got shorter for both of us... so, every three hours per day and between food time at 8pm and 6am just one more feeding... Hope, Zolicek will get through it without any extremely noisy moments, and he will forget about the "midnight" feeding for his sweet dreams that he hopefully has.

April 28th, 2008 - Just yesterday we decided to go to Brno (Moravia), where there a private Balloon Factory to see. Mr. Kubicek did invite us to his art show, and our American friends from Albuquerque (New Mexico) did appreciate that as much as they love their job in their home town. Hope, one day will Zolicek enjoy the May Balloon Fiesta in Bratislava (Slovakia) at least as much as I did the October Balloon Fest in Albuquerque two years ago.

April 30th, 2008 - The Burning of the Witches Night
From the Middle Ages, it was believed that days existed when evil forces had greater power than they did at other times.
One such day was the night of April 30th. The belief in evil forces,
which is as old as humanity itself, changed over time into the
superstition that the devil could only exercise his power on earth
through people – witches and wizards. As a defense against witches,
people burned fires in high places. This is a custom of very ancient origin in certain regions.

With the passage of time the annual fires became the “burning of the witches.” Youth set fire to brooms and threw them hight, supposedly so that they could see how witches flew on the brooms in the air. We were in Bratislava and Balloon dept made a special night next to the Donau river. At one side of the river bank they did switch their Balloons on... I mean they get through all steps like they are ready to fly up, but they stayed at the ground, and the show appear very nice in the night... one could to watch it from the other side of bank across the river or closer to come and burn all bad thoughts from last year out... just go ahead and clean your head!

May 1st, 2008 - May 1, the time of love
A girl should be kissed under a cherry blossom so that she will always be beautiful. Some of Prague lovers head to Petřín hill May 1st in order to leave a flower at the memorial to Karel Hynek Mácha (1810–1836), a Czech romantic poet who wrote the poem Máj (May). The poem recounts a tragic love between two young people and it's one of the classics of Czech literature.

May 4th, 2008 - 2 months old tomorrow
Zoelee is getting older day by day as all of us, but at him, it's visible! You can see if he hungry, sleepy or just pushing to his dipper the rest of last milk... his face and his motion is all his expression, all muscles at his face have some current period of time to develop well... who knows... from "mimi" (Baby in Czech) might become a mime (pantomime). He will turn two months Monday.
